The TestArt Community is deeply saddened by the passing of Sonia Antinori (1963–2026), an acclaimed Italian playwright, theatre director, performer and one of the most original voices in contemporary theatre.

Throughout a career spanning more than three decades, Sonia dedicated herself to artistic research, cultural exchange and the exploration of new theatrical languages. Her award-winning plays were translated into several European languages and staged internationally, while her work as a dramaturg, translator and mentor helped build lasting connections between artists, communities and cultures. Deeply rooted in the Marche region, she believed theatre could create spaces for dialogue, participation and transformation, always supporting emerging artists and innovative creative practices.

These values were at the heart of her contribution to TestArt. As a member of the Purple Team, Sonia took part in the first artistic residency in Dresden, where she collaborated with Matilda Klamas and Sara Östebro in developing the foundations of a new theatre performance. Starting from a collection of personal letters reflecting on belonging, time, routine and mortality, the residency evolved into an intense process of dialogue, improvisation and shared writing centred around one timeless question: how to live. Together with Matilda Klamas, Sonia shaped the artistic concept and began writing the script that would give voice to these reflections.

Even while facing illness, Sonia never stopped creating, mentoring and sharing her knowledge with others. Her generosity, intellectual curiosity and remarkable ability to transform personal experiences into powerful theatrical narratives left a lasting impression on everyone who worked with her.

Her voice, her vision and her commitment to collaboration will continue to inspire the TestArt community and all those who had the privilege of working alongside her.
